In My Shoes With Ysabel Hilado
Repurposing, reworking, reinventing: they’re a big tick for individuality and a step in the right direction for a healthier, happier earth. It’s a belief that underpins Clarks’ vision for a better tomorrow. From our Icons Reimagined collection and Every Move Matters manifesto to our partnership with upcycling advocates like American fashion designer Ysabel Hilado - we’re committed to nurturing and protecting the planet we all call home.
Speaking of Ysabel and upcycling…the California native is something of a thrift-shopper extraordinaire and loves nothing more than giving second-hand pieces a new lease of life. With such cool, planet-kind credentials, we knew we had to team up with her for Earth Day 2022. We sent Ysabel a selection of leather offcuts to work her creative magic on, and she more than delivered! Check out her dual-tone bag over on our socials and keep reading to hear all about Ysabel’s take on style and sustainability.

My name is Ysabel Hilado! I'm a 23-year-old fashion designer and digital content creator from Southern California.
How would you describe your fashion sense?
I describe my style as street chic. I'm inspired by streetwear, but I like to incorporate a feminine, contemporary twist!
Why do you feel it’s important to showcase your upcycling journey?
I love sharing the start to finish process of taking an existing garment or scrap material and turning it into a usable item. I hope to inspire others to do the same!

What inspired you to start your upcycling journey?
I’m an avid second-hand shopper. I enjoy visiting local flea markets, thrift stores, and swap meets. There are so many pieces I've come across that can be easily restored with a simple alteration. As a fashion designer, I love the challenge of creating a completely new garment from limited materials.
What is the most important thing in life for you?
A simple jumpsuit, my leather jacket, a nice pair of jeans, and gold jewellery!
How would you encourage people to ‘Invest in our Planet’ - the theme for Earth Day 2022?
The fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters in the world. When it comes to the clothes we wear, it's important to take care of them so they can last longer in your closet and stay out of landfills! Pay attention to wash tags, repair any rips and holes once you see them, and even invest in pieces containing natural fibre content such as cotton, linen, and flax. Before you decide to discard an old garment, see if you can do any alterations such as fixing a button or changing the colour with dye.
